For Nietzsche it was not suffering as such that mattered, but how men bore it. That is the great difference between his aristocratic stance and that of the two peasant philosophers [Hesiod och Rousseau]. To Nietzsche the contrast between the noble and the priest was one between heroism and cowering guilt, between facing fate and blaming oneself. The progeny [avkomman] of the two reveal it also. Art is at least an acceptance of nobility, while philosophy is the expression of priestly guile. The struggle between Homer and Plato, poetry and philosophy, is only a battle in the war between creativity and asceticism. (p.151)
