En viktig skillnad mellan hat och avund (Tocqueville/Elster)

Även om Tocqueville begreppsligt använder sig av både hat och avund i sina analyser så är han ofta slarvig i sin terminologi. Jon Elster anmärker att dessa två inte bara är olika känslor i sig, de leder även de som hyser dem till att handla på helt olika sätt. De har olika ”action tendencies”. Elster skriver:

[The] action tendency of hatred is to destroy the hated person; that of envy is to destroy the envied object, not its possessor. In the analysis of a revolution that began by destroying privileges, and ended by killing the privileged, this distinction is obviously important.
